HTC Sensation XE: Big Audio Dynamite

Dr. Dre. He’s pretty good isn’t he?(prfrog) Bringing the likes of N.W.A to the masses, playing a key role in the rise of Hip-Hop to its current standing as the dominant cultural force in music, producing the likes of Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z and Raekwon, unleashing one Mr Marshall Mathers onto the world and, most recently, creating his own brand of souped-up headphones alongside Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine.

And HTC, they’re pretty good aren’t they? Going from a virtually unknown manufacturer to a key player in the mobile market in just a couple of years, playing a vital role in the rise of the smartphone to its current standing as the essential device of the the 21st century, producing the likes of the XDA range, the HTC Touch, the Google Nexus One, unleashing the HTC Cha Cha on to the world and, most recently, creating two top-notch Mango handsets alongside Windows Phone honchos Microsoft.

What would happen if somehow, the two were combined? Would the result be a phone that would go on to be a key influence for thousands of Hip-Hop artists, DJs and producers, defining an era? Or would the first ever rapper with an intuitive user interface and touch-sensitive gesture controls spring forth. Sadly for fans of Hip-Hop-based whimsy, but brilliant for devotees of supreme audio performance from smartphones, the result is the HTC Sensation XE; the first HTC device to feature Dr. Dre’s Beats Audio technology. Is it any good? Or is all HTC’s blather about revolutionising the level of audio performance from mobile devices all just a load of noise? Let’s find out…

Design

If you’ve ever seen a HTC Sensation before, then you’ve seen this device as the HTC Sensation XE looks almost exactly the same as the one without the audio-steroids. That’s no bad thing though as the Sensation that preceded this one was a nice looking bit of kit which kind of had the appearance of a smoothed and flattened pebble (from the future), with its grey and gun-metal aluminium unibody exterior really making it look the business.

The front of the blower is dominated by a 4.3-inch qHD display (with a 540×960 resolution) that seems to have got even shiner since last time round. However, while it’s certainly capable of banging out some really impressive visuals, the gloss does make it a bit of a pain to use when there’s sun rays bouncing off it all over the place. An 8 MP camera sits proudly at the top of the removable rear panel and sidling up next to that is one of those handy dual LED flashes.

Like we say, there isn’t that much of an aesthetical (you’re making up words again aren’t you – Ed) difference between this and the first one but sharp-eyed fans of minuscule detail would pull us up if we failed to mention the teensy splashes of red that have materialised on the chassis. You see, because Dr. Dre’s Beats chaps have had a bit of an input on this one, HTC have accommodated some subtle flashes of the Beats branding which looks, from where we’re standing at least, to have manifested itself in the form of a Beats logo on the back and the touch sensitive nav buttons at the bottom of the screen and the speaker grill changing to a red hue.

Innards

As you’d expect from a bleeding-edge-of-now handset from a tippity top tech titan like HTC, their latest blower runs the latest version of the little green robot (that’s Android 2.3). That of course means that you get all of the Google goodness that comes with it; YouTube integration, Gmail, Maps, and the all important Android Market access. Those of you who appreciate a bit of graphical flourish here and there will be pleased to know that HTC’s lovely HTC Sense user interface makes a welcome return and this time, those weather animations and homescreen transitions look even more polished somehow.

This new slickness had us scratching our collective bonces and asking just how a phone that is essentially the same as the earlier Sensation bar some audio enhancements could look and feel even more swish and streamlined on the inside. Then, after a forceful poke in the ribs from our Editor, we reread the spec sheet and found that the considerable 1.2GHz dual-core processing power of the Sensation had been upped to a herculean 1.5GHz, hence why things shifted at quite a rate of knotts. The rest of what’s packed into that dapper shell remains the same as Sensation number one, namely an 8 MP snapper with 1080p HD video capture functionality, snazzy and speedy web browser, HTC’s Friendstream social networking widget and HTC Watch (a cool film/TV show download service).

If it’s the same on the inside and out, then what’s the point of releasing it? Well, that’s a question we were asking, but that was before we were subjected to the sonic assault fostered by that there Beats technology. Now HTC and Beats themselves have been bigging up the new audio shizz something rotten, and if we’d managed to magic up something like this, we’d be too. It works by loading a specially optimised ‘Beats Audio’ profile when you plug in the bundled Beats in-ear headphones and this automatically sorts out all the levels (like you would do yourself on one of those equaliser settings screens) resulting in studio-quality sound.

HTC say that the new tech will revolutionise the audio performance we expect from mobile devices, and having had a play about with the Sensation XE, we wouldn’t argue with that. Yes, the sound performance offered up by many high-end smartphones is far from awful, but this ups the ante – you really can tell the difference in quality when the Beats stuff is in action, even when compared to the sound produced when SRS equalisation is activated.

The Final Word

If you’re an audiophile for whom anything less than the highest standards of sound reproduction simply will not do, and carrying both a smartphone and an expensive, high-end MP3 player around with you is too much of a ballache, you might want to combine the two with the HTC Sensation XE. Combining all the chops you’d expect, nay demand, from a top smartblower all wrapped up in a lustrous design, not to mention unrivalled audio muscle resulting from Dr. Dre and his spangly tech, the HTC Sensation XE is a muso’s dream.

Barack Obama, a 47-year-old first-term senator from Illinois, shattered more than 200 years of history Tuesday night by winning election as the first African-American president of the United States.

A crowd of nearly a quarter-million jammed Grant Park and the surrounding area in Chicago, where Obama addressed the nation for the first time as its president-elect at midnight ET. Hundreds of thousands more — Mayor Richard Daley said he would not be surprised if a million Chicagoans jammed the streets — watched on a large television screen outside the park.

“If there is anyone out there who doubts that America is a place where anything is possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer,” Obama declared.
