Carbon emissions could be cut by 50% in two decades by switching to LED lighting, recent research suggests.

A report by management consultants McKinsey & Company reveals that the switch could be the most cost-effective way to tackle global warming, using existing technology.

The findings, featured in the New York Times, states that LEDs are more than twice as efficient as compact fluorescent bulbs, currently the standard for greener lighting.

LEDs, unlike compact fluorescents, turn on quickly and, importantly, are compatible with dimmer switches.

Indeed, separate evidence suggests that adding dimmer switches to your home could significantly reduce your carbon footprint.

While fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, which requires special disposal, LED bulbs contain no toxic elements, and last much longer. This means that disposal is much less of an issue.

Colin Humphreys, a researcher at Cambridge University, quoted in the New York Times, described LED lighting as “fit-and-forget lighting that is essentially there for as long as you live”.

While the cost of LED lighting may initially be higher, savings are made in the long term because of LED longevity.

Leading retailers, such as the online store Lights2Go include a range of LED lighting suitable for indoors and outdoors. They also stock dimmer switches suitable for the whole house including bathroom lighting.

Drivers are increasingly choosing to lease cars instead of buying them, figures have revealed.

Drivers are increasingly choosing to lease cars instead of buying them, figures have revealed.

Private motorists and businesses are taking advantage of car leasing deals which include insurance and servicing to save cash, industry experts say.

According to the latest figures from the Finance and Leasing Association the value of leased new cars in 2011 was £447m.

That compares with £302m in 2010 and represents an increase of 48%.

In the final three months of last year the value of leased cars was £114m, up from £72m in the corresponding three months of 2010. That represents a massive 58% increase.

The FLA suggests the rise in car rentals could be the result of increasing insurance costs and the servicing options in any car-lease agreement.

The organisation said another reason for the trend may be that individuals and businesses have less money to use as deposits because of the economic downturn.

The association’s Paul Harrison said: “While personal contract-purchase and hire-purchase deals remain popular, increasing numbers of people are turning to leasing as an affordable finance option.”

Contract hire means that you lease brand new cars or vans for a fixed monthly fee, agreed at the start of the contract.

At the end of the contract (usually 2 or 3 years), the vehicle is collected and a new one becomes available.

Homeowners spend the same amount of time choosing their dinner each day as they do testing out the mattress that they are likely to sleep on for the next eight years.

According to a recent survey by Scandinavian home furniture company Ikea, 72% of Britons take less than ten minutes to pick their mattress and a third spend even less time making the crucial decision, in less than five minutes.

The study of 3,000 UK adults, which was published as part of National Bed Month in March, revealed that many feel embarrassed when testing out a mattress. Over 30% admitted that they feel shy when doing so and 26% confessed that they wouldn’t lie down on it in-store before buying it.

Only 15% of couples surveyed said they would lie down on a mattress to test it out together before the purchase.

National Bed Month aims to encourage everyone to get a good night rest. Results showed that a worrying 70% of Brits do not think they are getting enough sleep and 52% blame this on having a bad mattress. However, 34% of women criticised their partners for hogging the duvet as the main reason for tossing and turning and struggling to fall asleep.

Having disturbed sleep is a hot health topic and the research concludes that embarrassment is preventing consumers from finding the right mattress for their body shape and needs, be it memory foam mattresses or pocket sprung.

Invest in a quality mattress today at Memflex where you will find everything from small singles and double memory foam mattresses, to super king size.

A number of British adults use stuffed animals to relax, de-stress and fall asleep, according to a recent survey.

Findings by hotel chain Travelodge show that 35% of grown-ups still take a teddy bear to bed with them to help them catch some zzz’s.

The research of 6,000 Brits revealed that men are the biggest kids at heart because 25% of males surveyed confessed that they take their stuffed animal away on business with them, and many said that it was because it reminded them of home and therefore aided them to fall asleep better.

The study also found that 24% men hid their soft toy when family, friends or girlfriends came to visit; and 10% of women admitted to treating their teddy bear like a best friend by sharing secrets with it.

Furthermore, the average teddy in Britain is 27-years-old and 50% of adults still has their teddy from their childhood.

There are many methods that people can carry out to help their kids fall asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow, and cuddling a soft toy on a bunk bed is one of them.

According to scientists from Cambridge University new solar cells could increase the maximum efficiency of solar panels by up to 25%.

Scientists from the Cavendish Laboratory in the University’s Department of Physics have developed a new type of solar cell which will harvest energy from the sun much more efficiently than the current ones.

It is said that the research which was published today (8th Feb. 2012) could dramatically improve the amount of useful energy which is created by solar panels. They work by absorbing energy particles from light which are called proton which then generate electrons which in turn creates electricity.

The fact that there’s an inability to extract the full amount of energy from all of the different colours of light at once means that your ‘traditional’ solar cells, found in solar pv panels are incapable of converting more than 34% of the available sunlight into electrical power.

If you would like to have a look into the possibility of getting some solar panels for your home then why not pay a visit to Enerfina.com and have a look around at all of their products which can help you to go green and reduce your carbon footprint.

Whether you’re looking for a ground source heat pump or a wood gasification boiler or even a wind turbine then you need to look no further than Enerfina. With regular discounts on their site you can be sure that you will find something that you’re looking for and more than likely you will find it at a great price.
