Warm Weather Resulted In Overall UK Energy Consumption Falling 14% In 2011

Britain recorded its second warmest year in 2011 which with reduced utility consumption, meant that energy consumption in the UK was down.

According to the latest official figures by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), the overall primary energy consumption in Britain fell by 14% last year; and the mild weather resulted in the UK gas demand being at its lowest level since 1995.

The UK Energy Statistics – 2011 provisional data report revealed that primary energy consumption was down by 7% compared with the previous year and oil was down by 17%. Gas energy production also fell by 20%.

However in stark contrast, low carbon energy production grew, nuclear output was up by 11% and wind output soared 59%. It was strong rainfall in Northern Scotland that triggered hydro to surge by 70%.

But despite the gas demand being low, gas imports exceeded UK production for the first time as well as crude oil imports which exceeded UK production for the first time since 1978.

The amount of electricity generated by major wind power producers increased to 4% in 2011 and the portion of hydro grew to 1.5%. Low carbon sources accounted for over 25% of major power producers’ generation in 2011, which is up 5% from two years ago. Overall, gas accounted for 41% of electricity supplied in 2011, coal accounted for 32% and nuclear 20%.

The findings show that overall less energy was used in the UK because there was less demand for energy for heating because of the warmer weather. No longer a Lostcords

After the success of their first studio album Kamakaze Showdown, Lostcords are back with a brand new single Climbing trees.

Lostcords are an up-and-coming rock band from Horton, consisting of Ben Smith on drums, Lee Townend on rhythm guitar, Adam Verity on lead guitar and Reuben Collis on bass and lead vocals. The band started out four years ago with Adam and Lee jamming together at Lee’s grandma’s house while she was out at bingo but what began as two pals having a laugh together has now become a serious venture for the Horton lads. After Ben joined on drums, the trio actively sought a bassist and singer to complete the band and recorded their first album at Langley studios. Despite this the lads still don’t take themselves seriously and love nothing more than playing to a live crowd.

Lead singer Reuben says: “There were no real intentions of it being a serious band, it was just an idea. We started practicing in Adam’s garage twice a week and three years later were on the verge of something really special.”
Reuben adds: “Our aim for the future is to get recognition in the industry so that we can tour. We believe we have the songs, it’s just getting them out there.”
The four-piece band play a mixture of rock and pop music and cite Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain, Nikki Sixx and Slash amongst their influences. The lads are also big fans of Motown.

On their music, the band said: “We like to think we are original but there is always an element of our inspirations in our sounds, which I guess can’t be helped.”
The band regularly play at gigs in and around the Reading area and will be performing at the Battle of the Bands in High Wycombe on the 2nd of January and at the Zenith bar in Islington on the 14th.
